TIMING THE LAMBRETTA ENGINE: how to do it

MESSA IN FASE DEL MOTORE LAMBRETTA: come fare
Below are some points that can help you phase your Lambretta’s engine:
  • 1) Mark top dead center on the engine scroll near the flywheel.

To facilitate this operation, it is advisable to remove the spark plug and, using the help of inserting a sufficiently thick tin wire inside the spark plug hole, rotate the engine by hand until the piston stops. Rotate the engine back and forth to highlight when the piston is at top dead center In correspondence with the arrow marked on the flywheel, mark the top dead center found on the engine scroll.

  • 2) Mark the degrees of advance you want to obtain on the engine.

The advance degrees may vary based on the type of engine and ignition that is installed.
The correct degrees of advance must be requested from the manufacturer. To give some references we can consider 21/20° advance for standard fixed advance engines; in the case of elaborate engines it is advisable to reduce the advance to 18/19° in order to avoid unpleasant overheating. In the case of ignitions with variable advance, the degrees must be set based on the advance map.

  • 3) Using a goniometer, mark on the flywheel nut a desired point in advance (standard) 20/21° compared to the previous top dead center point (marked in phase 1).
  • 4) Using a stroboscopic gun, turn on the engine and check that the arrow on the flywheel corresponds to the chosen point 20/21° ahead.

If the arrow on the flywheel does not correspond to the desired 20/21° point marked on the nut, disassemble the flywheel, loosen the stator screws, rotate the stator plate clockwise/anti-clockwise in order to match the two points (flywheel arrow and point of advance chosen marked on the scroll). Rotating the stator clockwise implies a delay in ignition, while anti-clockwise rotation defines an advance in the degree of ignition.
